Dressing for the occasion

How to choose an evening dress: start with the occasion

Choose an evening dress by venue, dress code, fabric and fit. A practical checklist for a wedding, engagement party or formal evening.

1. Read the invitation before choosing the dress

Start with the event rather than a photograph of a dress. A seated evening reception, an outdoor wedding and a graduation celebration place different demands on your outfit. Note the dress code, start time, venue and how much you expect to walk or dance. If the invitation specifies a colour or level of formality, let that guide your shortlist.

You do not need a different dress for every kind of event. The aim is to choose a silhouette you enjoy wearing, then check that its length, finish and movement suit the setting.

2. Let the venue narrow your choices

For a garden or beach setting, check how the hem moves over uneven ground and whether it will catch on your shoes. Indoors, think about stairs, seating and the room temperature. For a long evening, an attractive dress still needs to let you sit, breathe and move comfortably.

  • Outdoor event: check the hem, layers and ease of walking.
  • Seated dinner: test the waist and bodice while sitting.
  • Dancing: raise your arms and take a few full steps during the fitting.

3. Compare fabric, lining and structure together

A fabric name alone does not tell you how a dress will feel. A lined satin gown and a lightly constructed satin dress can behave very differently. Look at the fibre composition, lining, fabric weight and support in the bodice. Read our satin, crepe and chiffon guide before deciding which finish you prefer.

4. Choose by measurements, not just the size label

Compare your bust, waist and hip measurements with the guide for the specific product. Keep the tape level and avoid pulling it tight. If your measurements fall across sizes, ask which measurement governs the fit of that model. A fitted bodice and a relaxed skirt do not need the same amount of ease.

Ask about alterations before ordering. A simple hem adjustment is a different request from changing a neckline or rebuilding the bodice.

5. Make the fitting a movement test

Bring the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear. Check the neckline when you lean forward, the waist while sitting and the hem while walking. View the dress in ordinary light as well as the fitting-room mirror. If you keep adjusting a strap or pulling at the skirt, discuss the cause before accepting the fit.

Before you decide: Can you sit comfortably, raise both arms and walk without holding the hem? Does the dress stay in place without constant adjustment?

6. Keep a little room in the plan

Confirm the delivery date and any alteration appointments before the event. Ask for the care instructions, and plan how you will transport and store the dress. Does an evening dress have to be long?

No. Follow the invitation and the formality of the event. Length is one part of the overall look, alongside fabric, cut and accessories.

Should I buy a smaller size for a closer fit?

Choose according to the product measurements and the intended fit. A smaller label can create pulling at seams rather than a better silhouette.
